As a parent or caregiver, finding a speech therapist for your child can be a daunting task. The right therapist can make a huge difference in your child’s progress and development. In previous posts, I have discussed how to find an SLP and qualifications an SLP should have. When you’re chatting with an SLP, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure you find the best fit for your child’s needs. Here are some questions to consider:

What are your qualifications and experience?

It’s important to know that your child’s therapist is qualified and experienced. Ask about their education, certifications, and experience working with children who have similar needs as your child. You may also want to ask about their specializations and whether they have experience working with children with specific conditions such as apraxia or autism.

What is your approach to therapy?

Different therapists may have different approaches to therapy. Some may use a play-based approach while others may use a more structured approach. It’s important to find a therapist whose approach aligns with your child’s needs and learning style. Ask about their approach to therapy and how they customize their approach for each individual child.

How do you involve parents and caregivers in the therapy process?

As a parent or caregiver, you play an important role in your child’s therapy. Ask the therapist how they involve parents and caregivers in the therapy process, and how you can support your child’s progress at home. You may also want to ask if they provide parent education and resources to help you better understand your child’s needs.

What is your availability and scheduling process?

Therapy is a commitment, and it’s important to find a therapist whose schedule works for you and your child. Ask about the therapist’s availability, scheduling process, and how they handle cancellations and rescheduling. You may also want to ask about the therapist’s policy for missed sessions and whether they offer make-up sessions.

How do you measure progress and success?

Measuring progress is an important part of therapy, but it can look different for each therapist. Ask about how the therapist measures progress and success, and what goals they typically set for their clients. You may also want to ask how frequently they track progress and whether they use any formal assessment tools.

What is your communication style and how often do you communicate with parents and caregivers?

Communication is key in any therapeutic relationship. Ask about the therapist’s communication style and how often you can expect updates and progress reports. You may also want to ask how you can contact the therapist with questions or concerns, and whether they are available outside of scheduled therapy sessions.

What is your approach to working with insurance and payment?

Ask about the therapist’s approach to working with insurance and payment, and what options are available for families who may not have insurance coverage. You may also want to ask about any additional fees or charges for assessments or materials.

I hope these questions can help you in your search for the right speech therapist for your child. Remember, finding the right therapist is a process, so take your time, do your research, and don’t be afraid to ask questions until you find the best fit!
